Bias Allegations: Ohanaeze Demands Removal of Enugu Police Commissioner

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has described as unacceptable the explanation offered by the Enugu State Police Command on the reason for inviting the chairman of Uzo-Uwani local government area, Mr Chijioke Ezugwu.

Ohanaeze youths urged the Inspector General of Police to transfer the Enugu Police Commissioner, accusing him of bias and selective justice.

SaharaReporterts had reported that the chairman was summoned for setting up a vigilante which had been combing the bushes in search of killer herdsmen.

However, in a statement issued by the command, it said the chairman’s summon was over ongoing investigations into the murder of eight persons in a community within Uzo-Uwani LGA, in which the Chairman has been implicated.

Reacting, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said the statement issued by the police added insult to injury.

Okwu said it was unacceptable that the police “which have failed in its duties to halt the mindless killing of Uzo-Uwani natives are quick to summon the council chairman because he made a phone call to ask for the release of a motorcycle.

“This to us amounts to dancing on the graveyard of the countless number of people who have been murdered by rampaging herdsmen in Uzo-Uwani local government area.

“We are forced to ask the police- ever since the herdsmen started their havoc in Uzo-Uwani, how many of them have been arrested?

“How many of the killer herdsmen are being prosecuted in Enugu State, if at all any arrests have been made?”

Okwu said it was only a straightforward answer to the questions that would clear the doubts in the minds of Ndigbo “on the claims in certain quarters that the killer herdsmen have enablers in high places.

“Does it mean that Ndigbo have remained second class citizens in this country?

“Murderous herdsmen cannot be arrested, but it is most convenient for the police to summon the chairman, or invitation as they chose to call it.

“We make bold to say that this insult on Ndigbo must stop.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council state unequivocally that the explanation by the police is unacceptable; the Enugu State Commissioner of Police should tell us how many killer herdsmen he has arrested and that are being prosecuted.

“Anything to the contrary, we are calling on the Inspector General of Police to transfer him out of the state owing to the sentimental policing and selective justice under his command; the biais stinks and we have totally lost confidence in the Enugu Police Command under his watch,” Okwu stated.
