Bayelsa Police Arrest Kidnappers of Justice Umukoro, Governor Diri Honours Officer Who Rejected $17,000 Bribe

The Bayelsa State Police Command has apprehended members of the gang responsible for the abduction of Justice Ebiyerin Umukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court. The judge was kidnapped on June 21 in Yenagoa and held captive for 12 days before being successfully rescued through the coordinated efforts of security agencies.

Governor Douye Diri disclosed the breakthrough during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Yenagoa. He revealed that all members of the kidnap gang had been arrested, except for their leader, who remains at large and is the target of an ongoing manhunt.

“All those who committed the crime were apprehended except one who is still on the run. Bayelsa State has zero tolerance for crime and criminality,” the governor stated through his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah.

Integrity Rewarded: SP Sentome Obi Rejects Bribe, Honoured by State

During the same meeting, Governor Diri also honoured Superintendent of Police Sentome Obi, who rejected a $17,000 bribe from a suspect involved in an organ harvesting case.

The governor praised SP Obi for his gallantry, integrity, and exemplary service, describing him as a beacon of hope for the Nigerian Police Force at a time when the institution battles image challenges.

“SP Obi not only made the state proud, but also uplifted the image of the Nigerian Police Force,” Diri said, recommending him for promotion and rewarding him with a three-bedroom flat and a car.

Security Reforms and Recognition

Governor Diri reiterated his administration’s resolve to strengthen security across Bayelsa State by deploying modern technology, including drones and CCTV installations across Yenagoa and surrounding areas.

Bayelsa State Police Commissioner, Mr. Francis Idu, also lauded SP Obi for his uncommon integrity and urged the state government to continue investing in security infrastructure to protect lives and property.
