Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the killing of at least 27 worshippers inside a mosque in Katsina State on Tuesday by suspected bandits.
Reacting in a statement via his official X handle on Wednesday, Atiku described the incident as further proof that insecurity in Nigeria has reached an “epidemic level,” warning that citizens can no longer find safety even in places of worship.
“Insecurity has become a daily reality in many parts of the country. Villages are being attacked, highways have become unsafe, and now even mosques are not spared from bandit assaults,” he lamented.
Atiku accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of handling the worsening situation with indifference, saying government appears “detached from the suffering of Nigerians.”
He urged the Federal Government to rise to its constitutional responsibility of safeguarding lives and property, stressing that Nigerians deserve better protection from the growing wave of violence.
“The protection of lives and property must remain the primary duty of government,” the former vice president said, adding that urgent and decisive steps were needed to restore confidence in national security.
The Katsina mosque attack has drawn widespread outrage, with many Nigerians demanding stronger action against banditry and insurgency that continue to claim innocent lives across the country.
