The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Awgu Local Government Area has recorded a defining political moment following the successful conduct and official declaration of its Chairmanship Primary Election ahead of the September 2026 Local Government Elections in Enugu State.
The exercise, held across all eleven political wards on Tuesday, was marked by an impressive turnout of party faithful, stakeholders, youths, women groups, and community leaders who participated actively in what observers have described as a model democratic process.
From early accreditation to the final collation of results, the election was conducted in a peaceful, transparent, and orderly manner under the supervision of party officials and members of the APC Primary Election Committee. The seamless coordination across the wards underscored the party’s growing internal cohesion and organizational strength within Awgu.
Obeagu Ward, in particular, drew significant attention with a remarkable turnout that stakeholders described as one of the most impressive displays of grassroots mobilization during the exercise. Speaking at the ward, key stakeholder Hon. Tochukwu Chukwu commended the massive participation and urged continued support for the party and its leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections, highlighting ongoing developmental efforts across the state.
Official figures released during collation revealed strong participation across all wards, with thousands of accredited voters recorded. Notably, Agbogugu Ward led with 5,460 accredited voters, while Obeagu Ward recorded 892 voters out of 905 registered members — a testament to its strategic political relevance and high level of mobilization.
At the conclusion of the exercise, the APC Primary Election Committee declared the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, as the winner of the Chairmanship Primary Election. As the sole aspirant, he secured the party’s ticket with a total participation of 17,230 members and 17,226 valid votes cast across the eleven wards.
Announcing the result, the Collation Officer, Hon. Toby Odinwamkpa, commended party members for their discipline and peaceful conduct, describing the exercise as one of the most credible and well-organized primaries in the area’s recent political history.
In his acceptance remarks, Hon. Okolo expressed profound appreciation to party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters for their trust, while also acknowledging the leadership of the Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whom he praised for transformative governance and infrastructural development.
Describing his emergence as a collective victory for the people of Awgu, Okolo reaffirmed his commitment to continuity in development and people-oriented governance, emphasizing that the local government remains firmly aligned with the APC’s vision.
Stakeholders and observers unanimously described the primary election as peaceful, credible, and reflective of a united party structure poised for victory in the forthcoming elections.
With the successful conclusion of the chairmanship primary, the APC in Awgu Local Government Area has significantly strengthened its political footing, setting the stage for what many anticipate will be a dominant performance in the 2027 local government elections.
