Senate President Godswill Akpabio has clarified that Nigerian lawmakers are in the Senate not to enrich themselves, but to make sacrifices for the benefit of future generations.
Akpabio made this statement on Wednesday during the debate on the general principles of a bill seeking to amend the Electricity Act, 2023.
UGAMA TV reports that the proposed legislation, titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Electricity Act, 2023, and for Related Matters, 2025 (SB. 862)”, aims to address new challenges in the nation’s power sector. The bill seeks to improve regulatory and policy coordination, strengthen sectoral financing, safeguard electricity infrastructure, promote better labor relations, clarify transition arrangements, and redefine how licensees engage with host communities.
The amendment bill was sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power.
While expressing support for the bill, Akpabio emphasized the critical role of electricity in driving Nigeria’s industrial development. He stressed that revamping the sector is essential for sustainable economic growth.
“People think we are here in the Senate to make money, not knowing that we are here to sacrifice for future generations,” Akpabio stated, underlining the Senate’s commitment to enacting policies that will secure a better future for all Nigerians.
