Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has revealed that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) was aimed at retaining his position as Speaker and ensuring continued development for his constituency.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West and was initially elected on the PDP platform, officially announced his defection to the APC during the House plenary on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, a day after making the switch.
Addressing the Assembly, Agbebaku explained that his move was not about party loyalty, but about advancing the growth and well-being of his people. He emphasized that remaining Speaker would allow him to better attract developmental projects to Owan West.
“This decision is about service, not politics,” he said. “If I give up a position that brings development to my constituency just for party loyalty, then I’m not truly serving my people.”
He noted that his constituents supported his decision, particularly in light of recent projects initiated by the state government in Owan West.
Agbebaku dismissed claims of personal interest, insisting that his defection was rooted in a deep sense of responsibility to those who entrusted him with a mandate.
He also highlighted the importance of unity in the Assembly and acknowledged the value of having opposition voices. Despite the political shift, he pledged continued collaboration with all lawmakers to ensure the delivery of democratic dividends across Edo State.
“We are all united in working with the governor to move the state forward. Party lines should not divide us in this House,” he concluded.
