United States President Donald Trump has said that Cuba could be the next country targeted after Iran.
Trump made the remark on Friday while speaking at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Miami, Florida. During his speech, he hinted that Cuba might be next, even jokingly asking the media to ignore the comment after making it.
The statement followed recent U.S. military actions connected to Iran and earlier operations involving Nicolás Maduro, who was captured during a U.S. raid in January.
Trump said, “Cuba is next, by the way, but pretend I didn’t say that. Please disregard that statement… Cuba’s next.” Reports noted that he did not provide specific details about any concrete plan regarding the island nation.
Cuba is currently facing a severe economic and energy crisis, which has been worsened by long-standing U.S. sanctions and disruptions in oil supplies, pushing the country toward a humanitarian challenge, according to international observers including the United Nations.
Earlier this month, Trump had also suggested that the Cuban government might collapse soon, although he indicated his administration’s immediate focus remained on Iran.
