Abia to implement new environmental sanitation measures

The Abia State government led by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has warned that it has initiated a paradigm shift in the method of environmental sanitation in the state.

The new Commissioners for Environment and Information, Barr Sam Nwogu and Barr Eze Chikamnayo respectively, stated this in Umuahia and Aba on Saturday during the October edition of the monthly exercise, adding that the exercise will now come with new vigour.

Chikamnayo said the state government will enforce the exercise to help residents clean their environment as “Ikpeazu wants the state to be clean”.

He said the monthly exercise should also be internalised on daily basis, adding that he has concluded plans to discuss with landlords and motor parks on the new modalities that are underway.

He said arrangements have been concluded to provide Abia State Environmental Sanitation Authority with all they need to keep the state clean.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment, Barr Sam Nwogu said it was the mandate of the state government that the exercise be carried out in a new and clear dimension and “no more as a jamboree”.

Addressing the commissioners in Aba, the Zonal Manager of ASEPA, Rowland Nwakanma assured that his agency is doing its best to evacuate the huge refuse generation in the Aba Area, that comes after each sit-at-home, and also to address the attitude of the residents of not bagging their refuse as required by the agency.

The Commissioners monitored refuse disposal at Isi Gate, Umuahia and Opobo Junction, Ogbor Hill, Aba where they also flagged off the exercise.
