Less than a week after President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to bring perpetrators of the Yelewata killings to justice, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the arrest of 28 suspects believed to be behind the deadly attack in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the IGP confirmed that efforts are still underway to track down additional suspects linked to the massacre.
“We are not overwhelmed. Our officers are actively recovering illegal light and small arms, and the operation continues,” Egbetokun assured.
He added that all arrested suspects will be formally arraigned in court, including 22 individuals recently apprehended in Jos in connection with the brutal killing of nine travelers en route to Quanpan for a wedding.
The arrests come in response to a recent attack by suspected armed herders in Yelewata, where around 200 people were killed and widespread destruction was reported. The tragic event drew national and international attention, including condolences from Pope Leo XIV.
President Tinubu, during a visit to Benue State, had issued a firm directive to the police to bring the perpetrators to justice. The swift arrests mark a significant step in that effort.
