Veteran journalist and former presidential aide Reuben Abati has said that the defection of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could greatly influence the opposition’s political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Tuesday, Abati explained that Kwankwaso’s move, along with supporters from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, has strengthened the ADC and positioned it as a possible coalition platform for major opposition figures.
He highlighted the political importance of Kano State in presidential elections, noting that the state has 44 local government areas and a large voting population. According to him, Kano remains one of the key states that can determine electoral outcomes, alongside Rivers State and Lagos State.
Abati said Kwankwaso, who is considered a highly influential political figure in Kano, could significantly shape the political contest in 2027 following his defection.
However, he also raised concerns about how the internal politics of the ADC might play out, especially regarding the party’s presidential ticket. Abati pointed out that Kwankwaso has long expressed interest in running for president, which raises questions about whether he will secure the party’s ticket, become a running mate, or be involved in a broader political arrangement.
The analyst also mentioned ongoing speculation about a possible alliance between Peter Obi and Kwankwaso, while wondering how such a partnership might affect the political position of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar within the party.
According to Abati, the developments suggest that the political contest ahead of 2027 is just beginning, and more political drama and realignments are likely to unfold in the coming months.
