2026 FIFA World Cup: Cape Verde Make History Despite Argentina Defeat, Match Nigeria’s Record

Cape Verde became the first African nation to score more than one goal in a World Cup match against the defending champions.

The Blue Sharks were also the second African nation to score 2 goals plus in a World Cup match against Argentina, after Nigeria in 2014.

They achieved this feat after losing 3-2 against Argentina in the World Cup Round of 32 encounter earlier today.

Recall that Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead in the first half, but the African side equalized in the second half through Deroy Duarte.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after normal time, but the World Cup champions eventually won 3-2.
Diney Borges’ own goal in extra-time ensured Lionel Scaloni’s men eliminated Cape Verde from the competition and progress to the Round of 16, where they will face another African team, Egypt.
