17-year-old girl stabbed to death by asylum seeker suspected to have raped a woman days earlier in Amsterdam

A 22-year-old asylum seeker has been arrested in connection with the killing of 17-year-old Lisa, who was fatally stabbed in Amsterdam as she called police to report that she was being followed.

Lisa was cycling home to Abcoude after a night out with friends at around 3:30 a.m. when she placed a distress call to the emergency number. The teenager was attacked before the call went through. Her body, bearing multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso, was later discovered in a ditch near the secondary school she had just graduated from.

Police confirmed the suspect had been arrested only days earlier on allegations of r@pe in Weesperzijde on August 15, as well as a third accusation of assaulting a woman on August 10. Dutch media reported that he was staying at an asylum reception site in Amsterdam run by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers.

Lisa’s death has triggered shock and anger across the Netherlands. Hundreds of residents left flowers and handwritten notes at the scene of the killing, while Ajax fans paid tribute with a moment of silence and banners bearing her name at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

In a statement, her grieving family said: “Our hearts are broken. We hope we can mourn Lisa’s loss together in peace and privacy. We are immense supported by the love and sympathy from family, friends, and fellow villagers, and we want to express our gratitude for this.”

The case has also reignited debates on safety and asylum policy. A nationwide “Reclaim the Night” march was held after Dutch actress and author Nienke Gravemade shared a poem reflecting on Lisa’s final moments. Referring to the red handbag Lisa carried on her bicycle, Gravemade wrote: “The red bag. I keep thinking about that red bag. How it dangled from her handlebars as she drove through the night. A night that belonged to her too. I claim the night. I claim the streets. I demand that the fear be lifted.”

Authorities are appealing to witnesses seen in CCTV footage near the crime scene, including a scooter rider, a Biro microcar, and the occupants of a delivery van, to come forward. Police said: “What happened between the victim’s departure from Leidseplein and the discovery of her body is still unclear. We are urgently seeking information about her last cycling route and are calling on three specific road users to come forward.”

Over 500 people marched in Rotterdam on Sunday in a protest against femicide, carrying signs with messages such as “She had dreams, no grave needed” and “Not all men, but always men.”

The Netherlands has been grappling with political turmoil over asylum policy, which led to the collapse of the Dutch government in June after far-right leader Geert Wilders withdrew his party from the ruling coalition.
