1,500 Futures in White Coats: FUAHSE Enugu Ignites a Healthcare Revolution as Students Storm Historic Second Matriculation

The Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu has recorded another landmark stride in Nigeria’s healthcare education landscape, successfully matriculating about 1,500 students during its second matriculation ceremony in a colourful and momentous event that underscored the institution’s rapid rise as a hub of academic excellence.

The ceremony, held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, drew an impressive gathering of members of the university’s Governing Council, principal officers, parents, guardians, and key stakeholders from across and beyond Enugu State, reflecting the growing national interest in the institution’s vision.

The newly admitted students were inducted into diverse faculties, including Healthcare Services, Dental Health, Rehabilitation Health, Healthcare Management and Leadership, Health Engineering and Technology, and Basic Medical Sciences—fields critical to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Proceedings commenced with a dignified academic procession led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor John Emaimo, alongside members of the academic community and the matriculating students, setting the tone for a ceremony marked by pride, purpose, and promise.

Spiritual reflections were offered by Professor H. U. Ezeugwu and Reverend Samuel Okoro, who charged the students to embrace discipline, integrity, and dedication as they embark on their academic journey.

In his matriculation address, Professor Emaimo reaffirmed the university’s unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare education through innovation, cutting-edge research, and professional development aligned with the Federal Government’s transformation agenda in the health sector.

Describing the occasion as a defining milestone, the Vice Chancellor noted that the institution’s establishment on March 14, 2024, under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was a strategic intervention aimed at bridging the nation’s shortage of skilled healthcare professionals.

He emphasized that within just two years, the university has evolved into a fast-growing centre of excellence, now running six faculties and twenty-eight academic programmes, with a philosophy rooted in professionalism, research innovation, and community-driven healthcare delivery.

Highlighting infrastructural achievements, Professor Emaimo disclosed that the institution has completed key projects, including a state-of-the-art auditorium with over 1,000 seating capacity, a modern library, an advanced ICT complex, and a fully operational administrative building—developments that signal a strong foundation for sustainable academic growth.

In a goodwill message, the Registrar of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Dr. C. N. Nnebedum, congratulated the new students and urged them to remain focused, resilient, and committed to excellence.

Similar sentiments were echoed by registrars from sister institutions, including Alex Ekwueme Federal University and Enugu State University of Science and Technology, who expressed confidence in the students’ capacity to excel through diligence and discipline.

Speaking with UGAMA TV, the Faculty Officer of Basic Medical Sciences, Madam Adeze Chukwuka Ugwu, commended the seamless organization of the ceremony and urged students to uphold high academic and moral standards throughout their stay.

The atmosphere was further enlivened by expressions of joy from matriculating students such as Nnadozie Precious Chidindu and Princess Donald, who described their admission as a dream fulfilled and pledged dedication to academic excellence.

A defining highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of a Students’ Choice Award to the Vice Chancellor by the Students’ Union Government, led by Comrade Ugwuoti Marius Ikechukwu, in recognition of his visionary leadership and transformative contributions to the university’s growth.

As the ceremony drew to a close, a shared sense of optimism resonated among students, management, and stakeholders, reinforcing confidence that the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu, is steadily positioning itself as a leading force in healthcare education and professional training in Nigeria.
