101-year-old Osun woman survives COVID-19

A centenarian has survived the COVID-19 disease after spending 12 days on admission at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The 101-year-old resident of Ilesha, it was learnt, had shown symptoms of the disease for eight days before she was presented for treatment.

A statement by the Chief Medical Director, OAUTH, Prof. Victor Adetiloye on Thursday, explained that the woman was initially taken to a private hospital in Ile-Ife with acute cough, breathlessness, fever and malaise.

Adetiloye said the team that managed the patient encountered challenges, including advanced age, frailty, poor sleep, loss of appetite as well as frequent desaturation.

The team, however, successfully managed the case within 12 days of admission and the patient had since been discharged.

Giving insight into how the patient was managed, the CMD said symptoms of the disease had started manifesting in her eight days before she was presented for treatment, a development that worsened her clinical conditions and “this warranted a screening test for SARS CoV2.”

Adetiloye added, “The PCR result returned positive and she was subsequently admitted to the OAUTHC isolation centre on January 30, 2021. The relevant findings on admission included poor oxygen saturation (SpO2 90% on oxygen), lethargy, altered sensorium, neutrophilic leucocytosis and hypokalemia.

“She was subsequently managed with intravenous antibiotics, supplemental oxygen, high dose multivitamins, zinc sulphate, potassium supplementation, subcutaneous clexane and low dose intravenous dexamethasone.

“She was closely monitored as regards vital signs, especially the oxygen saturation, pulse blood pressure and blood glucose. She was cautiously anticoagulated and subsequently mobilised on a wheel chair.

“Her clinical condition gradually improved and she was weaned off oxygen six days after admission. At discharge, she was stable with oxygen saturation at 97 per cent and other vital signs were within normal limits. She was discharged home on medication and counselled on the need to observe all the non-pharmacological preventive measures against COVID-19.”

Apart from the case of the centenarian that was successful treated, Adetiloye said the OAUTH also managed 120 cases of COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic without any mortality, adding that from December till date, the hospital had successfully managed over 135 cases.
