YABATECH Council Pushes Stronger Ties Between Universities and Traditional Institutions for National Development

The Governing Council of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has called for a national policy that promotes stronger collaboration among tertiary institutions, traditional rulers, and local communities to drive sustainable development, youth empowerment, and innovation.

Speaking during a visit by the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, Oba Adeola Adeniyi Ajakaiye, YABATECH Council Chairman, Prof. Funso Afolabi, said Nigeria’s development goals can be accelerated when educational institutions and traditional authorities work together to tackle societal challenges. He noted that modern traditional rulers now play vital roles in education, security, economic growth, and community mobilization.

Afolabi highlighted the establishment of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin-Ekiti as a successful example of community-driven educational development. He stressed the importance of stronger links between higher institutions and host communities, noting that community support is essential for the growth and sustainability of tertiary institutions.

The council chairman also advocated greater investment in technical and vocational education to address unemployment and skills shortages among young Nigerians. He identified areas such as tourism, digital innovation, environmental sustainability, hospitality, and security technology as key sectors where collaboration can deliver economic benefits.

On security, Afolabi urged closer cooperation among educational institutions, government agencies, and community leaders to develop locally driven technological solutions to emerging security threats.

In his response, the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti expressed readiness to partner with YABATECH on initiatives that promote education, innovation, youth development, and sustainable growth. He revealed that the kingdom is developing a comprehensive security framework and believes the institution’s technological expertise can support indigenous security solutions.

YABATECH Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to entrepreneurship and skills development, particularly for young women, while emphasizing ongoing efforts to build strategic partnerships that contribute to national development.
