10 Killed, 10 Injured in Multiple Fatal Road Accidents in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed that 10 people lost their lives while 10 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in two separate accidents that occurred on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, along the Ozalla/Four Corner axis of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.

The tragic incidents, which were captured in viral videos earlier in the day, included one crash at Four Corner Junction that claimed an entire family and several others.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the command described the accidents as “separate but tragic fatal road crashes” that occurred at about 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.

According to the police, the first crash involved a Howo truck belonging to Visco Investment Global, loaded with bags of white cement and heading to Abuja from Aba. The truck collided with a Toyota Corolla attempting to overtake another vehicle on the inward Enugu-bound lane.

A Foton bus and a Daihatsu Hijet mini bus, both driving one-way, were also caught in the collision. The impact caused the truck and Toyota Corolla to burst into flames, killing all five occupants of the car instantly. A passenger in the mini bus was also confirmed dead, bringing the death toll from the first crash to six.

Later in the day, at about 3:00 p.m., another fatal crash occurred on the same route. This time, a Sino truck owned by Global Investment, also loaded with cement and driving one-way from Garriki Enugu to Nenwe in Aninri LGA, rammed into a tricycle carrying four passengers. All four victims were rushed to the hospital but later confirmed dead.

The police added that 10 other persons injured in both crashes are currently receiving medical treatment.

While commiserating with the bereaved families, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the accidents as avoidable. He directed the State Motor Traffic Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the crashes.

CP Giwa also cautioned motorists against reckless driving, particularly during the “Ember Months” when traffic volumes increase and accidents are more common.

“No journey is worth the loss of lives,” the CP stressed, urging drivers to obey traffic regulations, avoid dangerous overtaking, and prioritize safety over speed.
