Zidane, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo, Isco, Lucas… is this a week of goodbyes?

All eyes at Real Madrid are on Villarreal‘s visit to the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. That’s when the title will be decided in LaLiga Santander. Whatever the result at Valdebebas, though, more decisions will have to be made at the club in the coming weeks. Some of them concern their biggest names.

The futures of Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Marcelo, Isco and Lucas Vazquez are all up in the air, while Zinedine Zidaneseems to have already said his goodbyes.

Whether it’s with or without Zidane, the faces in the Real Madrid dressing room could change a fair bit this summer.

Ramos’ soap opera

The most significant exit could be that of Real Madrid‘s captain. Ramos is staring the end of a 16-year career at Real Madridin the face, with his contract set to expire at the end of June. The 35-year-old is desperate to secure a two-year extension to his current deal, while Florentino Perezis only willing to offer him a one-year contract.

One side has to budge eventually but, if they don’t, Ramos will leave Real Madridthis summer. Whether he gets to play against Villarreal on Saturday is also in major doubt. He could train out on the grass on Wednesday but Zidane would be wise to stick with his trusted partnership of Nacho and Eder Militao with the title on the line.

Varane on the exit ramp

The decade-long relationship between Varane and Real Madrid could come to an end this summer. The defender is out of contract in 2022 but has yet to commit to a new deal. Los Blancos, who risk losing the Frenchman for nothing in a year’s time, could be tempted to sell if they receive a bid in the region of 60 to 70 million euros.

Real Madrid understand that Varane has a better offer from elsewhere and, seeing as David Alaba is arriving this summer, they might not see his departure as a complete disaster.

Lucas is another Ramos

Like his compatriot, Lucas Vazquez is yet to agree to extend his contract at Real Madrid beyond its expiration this summer. The academy graduate, who returned to the club in 2015 and has been a regular in the team since, is facing an exit unless the club can meet his demands.

End of an era for Isco and Marcelo

Two of the most consistent performers from Real Madrid‘s four Champions League-winning campaigns, Isco and Marcelo appear to have reached a dead end at the club.

The pair fell out of favour after Zidane resigned as boss in 2018 and, despite the Frenchman’s return, they haven’t rediscovered their best form. Both of them have a year left on their contracts, though their high wages could be hard to shift.

Zidane’s third goodbye?

It’s no secret that Zidane isn’t expected to be Real Madrid coach next season. After saying goodbye as a player in 2006 and a coach in 2018, this would be his third farewell to Los Blancos.

The Frenchman has managed to win LaLiga Santander in his second stint in charge, though the squad needs a revamp and it appears that he’s stepped aside to let that happen.
