U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may significantly increase tariffs on India within the next 24 hours due to its continued business dealings with Russia.
Speaking in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Trump criticized India for purchasing Russian oil, claiming such actions support Russia’s military operations amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“We settled on 25 per cent, but I think I’m going to raise that very substantially over the next 24 hours, because they’re buying Russian oil,” Trump stated. “They’re fueling the war machine. And if they’re going to do that, then I’m not going to be happy,” he added.
Trump had earlier issued threats of increased tariffs in response to countries engaging in trade with Russia but had not specified figures until now.
He also referenced a 10-day deadline, beginning last Tuesday, for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in its conflict with Ukraine. Trump warned that failure to meet this condition would lead to sanctions on countries trading with Russia.
The president reiterated his intention to impose punitive measures against nations that continue economic relations with Moscow.
