President Bola Tinubu on Thursday hosted the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja for a high-level discussion on trade and economic development.
The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, centred on trade-related issues of significance to Nigeria, Africa, and the wider global economy.
Okonjo-Iweala’s visit comes just two weeks before the conclusion of her first four-year term as head of the WTO on August 31, 2025, and the start of her second term on September 1, 2025.
The former Nigerian finance minister made history in March 2021 when she became both the first African and the first woman to lead the 164-member organisation.
President Tinubu has previously lauded Okonjo-Iweala’s tenure, expressing confidence that her continued leadership will further strengthen the WTO’s role as a vital driver of inclusive global economic growth, fair trade practices, and sound governance over the next four years.
