Ahead of the November 20 judgment on the terrorism charge against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, South East youths have appealed to Justice James Omotosho to consider the implications of the judgement on the peace and stability of the zone.
The appeal was contained in an open letter addressed to Justice Omotosho South East Youth for Good Governance.
Linking the tension and unrest in the region to Kanu’s continued detention, the youths expressed concern about the far-reaching implications of any negative judgment on the region’s stability.
The youths in the open letter signed by their President, Dr Silas Eke; and Secretary, Ifeanyi Asiegbu, urged Justice Omotosho to prioritize the peace of the South East region in deciding Kanu’s fate.
According to the youths, Kanu has an overwhelming appeal across the entire region, and anything affecting him has huge implications for the people.
The letter read in part: “We appeal for compassionate judicial consideration in the ongoing matter involving Man Nnamdi Kanu.
“Your Lord, it is widely recognized that the prolonged detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has had the far-reaching, emotional, zonal and economic effects on the people of the South East region.
“He remains a central figure whose continued detention has contributed to heightened tension, restiveness and uncertainty in the region.
“We all believe that his release, through any kind of discretion available to the honourable court, would significantly contribute to restoring the claim, encouraging constructive dialogue and reducing agitation.
” His release will not only help to rebuild trust, but will also serve as a gesture towards national healing, reconciliation and unity.”
The youths explained that the open letter was not intended to dictate to the court but borne out of their respect for the integrity of the court as an apostle of peace.
“We do not seek to influence the due process of law, but to present broader humanitarian and social implications that accompany this matter.
“We are confident that Your lordship, in your wisdom and sense of justice, will consider these factors as you deem fit and proper within the bounds of the law”, the youths said.
The letter added that”Nigeria stands at a delicate moment where every act of fairness and compassion by the Judiciary strengthens the nation’s unity.”
“We remain hopeful that the court’s decision in this matter, guided by your renowned integrity, will open the door to peace, stability and mutual understanding”, the letter concluded.
