Soldiers and policeman killed in ambush in Kebbi state

Reports indicate that a deadly ambush by armed gunmen has left several people feared dead in Shanga Local Government Area, Kebbi State.

Eyewitnesses told Channels TV that the attack occurred on Tuesday night in the Giro Masa community, where security operatives were reportedly targeted while responding to intelligence about suspected gunmen.

According to accounts, soldiers were deployed after residents raised alarm about armed groups believed to be operating in the area, but were ambushed along the way. The attack is believed to have resulted in the deaths of an unspecified number of military personnel and at least two civilians, while two military trucks were reportedly set ablaze.

Residents described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, leaving the community in shock. Although the military has not officially commented, Nasir Idris confirmed the incident.

Speaking after visiting victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital Birnin Kebbi, he condemned the attack, saying: “This is a sad incident… These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents.” He added: “The Kebbi State Government will not relent in its efforts to protect the lives of its citizens.”

The governor also pledged support for victims, including covering medical bills for the injured and assisting families of fallen security personnel. He described the attack as “barbaric” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening security across the state.

The incident adds to a series of violent attacks across northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to target communities and security forces. Previous incidents include a 2025 clash in Mariga Local Government Area, Niger State, where 17 soldiers were killed, as well as repeated ambushes in Borno State linked to

insurgent groups.
