Security Crisis Deepens: Bandits Attack Amidst Proposed Prisoner Release in Katsina

Bandits on Tuesday night carried out coordinated raids on several communities, east of the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA), in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State, looting homes and rustling a large number of livestock.

The incident was reported on Wednesday by security analyst and crisis journalist, Bakatsine via his X handle.

According to Bakatsine, the attacks occurred despite the recently announced peace agreement between armed groups and local government stakeholders in the area, raising serious doubts about the credibility and effectiveness of the deal.

He added that the renewed violence comes amid reports that the Katsina State Government is considering the release of 70 suspected bandits as part of ongoing peace initiatives.

“The continued attacks have heightened fears among residents and raised urgent questions about the justification for releasing detained suspects while communities remain under threat,” Bakatsine wrote.

Security experts warn that releasing suspected bandits under a peace accord while attacks persist could embolden criminal networks and further undermine confidence in state security efforts.

Some residents have reportedly begun relocating from affected villages, fearing for their safety.

The situation has intensified scrutiny of the Katsina State Government’s strategy, with critics questioning whether the proposed release prioritizes political expediency over the protection of citizens.
