Awgu Egbeleli Elects New President General in Landmark Community Election

Awgu Egbeleli, a vibrant community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, has successfully elected a new leadership for the Awgu Egbeleli Development Union (AEDU), with Rt Hon Joe Ani emerging as the President General (PG). This significant electoral exercise took place on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at the Orie Awgu Motor Park, marking a new chapter in the community’s governance and development.

The peaceful and transparent election was conducted under the close supervision of the community’s electoral committee, security personnel, and members of the press. It followed the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing executive led by Prof Reko Okoye. The people of Awgu Egbeleli, both at home and in the diaspora, united in support of the process, reinforcing their shared vision for inclusive development.

Rt Hon Joe Ani won the election decisively, polling 160 votes to defeat his opponent, Chief Bernard Okeke, who garnered 10 votes. The election has been widely commended for its orderliness and fairness, with stakeholders hailing it as a model for other communities in Enugu State and beyond.

In his remarks, the outgoing President General, Prof Reko Okoye, praised the process and affirmed that it was “free, fair, and devoid of any agitation or crisis.” He emphasized the need for visionary leadership and urged the new administration to build on the gains of the past, unify the community, and ensure broad-based participation in development efforts.

“This is not just an election victory,” he said. “It is a reaffirmation of our collective will and unity. The new leadership must be inclusive, visionary, and focused on the real needs of our people.”

The atmosphere at the event was marked by joy and optimism, as delegates from AEDU branches across Nigeria and the diaspora participated. Community elders, stakeholders, and observers lauded the transparency of the process, describing it as a significant moment in the history of Awgu Egbeleli.

The Enugu State Government’s emphasis on peacebuilding and community empowerment was also reflected in the conduct of the election, further affirming the commitment of the community to sustainable grassroots governance.
