R&B icon Angie Stone died while desperately escaping car wreck, Family reveals in lawsuit

The family of late R&B legend Angie Stone has filed a lawsuit detailing the heartbreaking circumstances of her death in a devastating Alabama crash earlier this year.

According to court documents filed in Gwinnett County, Atlanta, Stone’s children, Diamond Stone and Michael D’Angelo Archer, are suing the drivers, a trucking company, and truck manufacturer Daimler Truck North America.

The lawsuit claims that Stone survived the initial crash when the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van carrying her, her entourage, and bandmates flipped over. Passersby reportedly helped rescue five of the nine passengers, but Stone was still struggling to escape when tragedy struck again.

A tractor-trailer carrying sugar allegedly slammed into the overturned van, ejecting Stone on impact and pinning her beneath the wreckage. The lawsuit states that she “consciously suffered” before succumbing to her injuries. She was 63.

The suit further alleges that the truck driver “was not paying proper attention to the roadway” and that the vehicle’s collision mitigation system failed to prevent the deadly impact.

Stone was returning home after a performance in Mobile, Alabama, at the time of the crash. Her daughter, Diamond, confirmed her passing in an emotional Facebook post that read, “My mommy is gone.”

The Grammy-nominated singer rose to fame in 1979 as part of the pioneering all-female hip-hop trio The Sequence, later launching a successful solo career with her 1999 debut album Black Diamond. She went on to become one of R&B’s most respected voices, with hits like More Than a Woman.

Her sudden death has left fans and family grieving, while the lawsuit seeks accountability for what her children describe as a preventable tragedy.
