Presidency Debunks Rumours of Plan to Rename Nigeria “United States of Nigeria”

A message circulating on WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media alleges that President Tinubu is preparing to rename the country as United States of Nigeria — along with sweeping constitutional changes.

This claim has been formally debunked. A post described as “Fake News Alert” by government sources denies any such plan, stating that no official document or credible directive supports the allegation.

Authorities emphasise that the rumour “does not emanate from the Presidency” and should be disregarded.

The claim originates solely from social media posts and forwarded messages — there is no coverage by reputable Nigerian or international media outlets.

Similar previously circulated false claims — e.g. fake statements purporting to come from the Presidency — have been proven to be doctored or fabricated.

Analysts note that such misinformation frequently spreads around politically sensitive topics, exploiting anxieties about governance, identity, and constitutional change.
