Political Realignment in Enugu: Analysts Weigh Gains and Risks of Mbah’s Move to APC

The recent defection of Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has continued to dominate political discourse across the nation, sparking both commendations and criticism from political observers, party stalwarts, and ordinary citizens alike.

On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Governor Mbah officially declared for the APC in a landmark event that effectively ended over two decades of PDP dominance in Enugu politics. Joined by members of his cabinet and key stakeholders, the governor raised the APC flag in what many describe as one of the most consequential political realignments in the South East since 1999.

A Bold Step or a Political Gamble?

Governor Mbah’s defection, though long speculated, has sent shockwaves through the state’s political structure. For months, analysts had pointed to the governor’s close working relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, coupled with growing discontent within the PDP, as strong indicators of a looming political shift.

Internal wranglings within the PDP—particularly the disregard for Mbah’s influence in the South East and the party’s mishandling of the National Secretary position—fueled frustrations that reportedly hastened his exit.

Political analysts now say Mbah’s decision represents a pragmatic move aimed at aligning Enugu State with the ruling party for strategic access to national resources and stronger federal representation.

Implications for Enugu State

Observers believe the defection could open doors for greater collaboration between Enugu and the Federal Government, potentially translating to increased funding, infrastructural development, and economic growth.

“With Mbah’s alignment to the APC, Enugu stands to gain more visibility and influence at the national level,” said one analyst. “This move could mark the beginning of a new phase of federal presence in the state.”

However, critics argue that the governor’s defection may alienate traditional PDP loyalists who view the shift as political betrayal. Others insist that Mbah’s stellar performance in education, infrastructure, and internal revenue growth will overshadow partisan concerns and sustain his popularity across the political divide.

A New Political Equation

Former Enugu State Governor, Barr. Sullivan Chime, took to social media to applaud the move, writing:

“Political alignment is not betrayal; it is the courage to follow a vision when old paths can no longer carry the dream.”

Mbah’s administration has been credited with notable reforms, including over 1,000 kilometers of new roads, significant boosts in internally generated revenue, improved security, and modernization across critical sectors. Many believe these achievements will solidify public trust even under a new political umbrella.

Looking Ahead to 2027

With the next general election barely 18 months away, attention now turns to how this realignment will reshape Enugu’s political identity. Supporters argue that the move positions the state strategically for greater inclusion in federal policymaking, while detractors warn of the risks of abandoning a long-standing political tradition.

For now, one thing remains clear: Enugu’s political landscape has entered a new era—one defined by strategic alignment, recalibrated ambitions, and the pursuit of renewed hope at the center of national politics.
