Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has debunked viral images circulating on social media purporting to show him with United States President Donald Trump and Lagos transport union leader, MC Oluomo.
The photos, which surfaced on Tuesday and quickly spread across various platforms, were accompanied by claims that Trump praised Obi.
In a statement posted on his X handle on Wednesday titled “Clarification on Fake News and Photos,” Obi described the pictures and the accompanying narratives as “fake and doctored,” stressing that he never attended any such meetings.
“One of such images purports to show me with US President Donald Trump, alongside a fabricated claim that he praised me. Another seeks to depict me with MC Oluomo in his office. Let me state categorically that both pictures are fake and doctored, and the accompanying stories are entirely false,” he said.
Obi warned Nigerians and the international community about the “persistent dangers of fake news and disinformation,” urging people to verify information before sharing and to resist propaganda intended to mislead.
He added that if he had attended such meetings, he would have publicly disclosed them, stressing that his politics is not about “seeking praise or cheap publicity,” but about tackling Nigeria’s core challenges, such as insecurity, poverty, education, healthcare, and strengthening the rule of law.
