Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for calm, urging party members and supporters to remain law-abiding as Nigeria awaits the Appeal Court’s decision on the party’s ongoing leadership dispute.
The statement, issued by Director-General Emmanuel Agbo on behalf of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF), under the chairmanship of Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, was made available to Sunday Sun. It addressed party faithful ahead of the ruling scheduled for Monday, March 9, 2026.
The forum reaffirmed its respect for the judicial process and reiterated its commitment to peace.
“We stand at a defining moment for our democracy. The judiciary, as the custodian of justice, carries the responsibility of ensuring fairness, impartiality, and the preservation of national stability. Whatever the decision may be, the PDP reaffirms its respect for the judicial process and its commitment to peace,” the statement said.
Highlighting the party’s role in Nigeria’s democratic journey, the forum noted, “The PDP has consistently contributed to the strengthening of institutions that protect citizens’ rights, whether in government or opposition.”
The governors urged members, supporters, and Nigerians at large to remain calm and disciplined in response to the court ruling. “Our collective reaction must reflect maturity and a deep respect for the rule of law. We call on all party leaders and members to exercise restraint, remain calm, and act lawfully before, during, and after the judgment. Party leadership will immediately convene to review the ruling and determine the next steps,” the statement added.
Looking ahead, the forum encouraged PDP members with political ambitions to trust the party as the platform for their 2027 electoral aspirations, noting that the party will ensure protection of their political rights even as the INEC publishes the timetable for the general elections.
The statement concluded by emphasizing the party’s commitment to democracy: “No ruling can erase Nigerians’ desire for a fair and competitive political system. The PDP will continue to participate fully in the democratic process, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and respected. The judiciary remains an impartial defender of the constitution, sustaining the stability of our democratic governance.”
