The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, has recorded its first-ever international flight, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s aviation history. On Saturday, Air Peace, Nigeria’s leading airline, successfully airlifted 315 pilgrims from Owerri to Medina, Saudi Arabia, as part of its inaugural 2025 Hajj operations.
The airline deployed its wide-body Boeing B777-300 aircraft, the largest plane to ever land and take off from the airport. This historic flight also highlights the airport’s enhanced capabilities following recent upgrades, including the installation of airfield lighting, enabling it to meet international aviation standards.
The non-stop flight from Owerri to Medina signals a new era for the South-East region, positioning it as a viable hub for international travel and religious tourism.
Air Peace described the event as a significant step in decentralizing international air travel in Nigeria and expanding global connectivity from all geopolitical zones.
Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima officially flagged off the flight, praising Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for fostering religious tolerance and inclusiveness. The development is seen as a testament to growing infrastructural progress and a boost to regional participation in international events.
