Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has strongly condemned the reported cases of physical and sexual abuse against women and girls during the Alue-Do Festival held in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, describing the incidents as “degrading and inhumane.”
In a statement she personally signed on Sunday, the First Lady expressed deep concern over viral videos showing victims being attacked during what was meant to be a cultural celebration. She stressed that while Nigeria’s cultural diversity should be respected, no tradition should be used to justify the violation of women’s rights or dignity.
She praised the swift response of the Nigeria Police Force in apprehending suspects and urged law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Mrs. Tinubu also reached out to the victims, encouraging them to seek proper medical attention and psychological support, while offering prayers for their healing and recovery.
The incident at the Alue-Do Festival has sparked widespread outrage, drawing attention to persistent concerns about gender-based violence linked to certain cultural practices. Her response further highlights the commitment of her Renewed Hope Initiative toward safeguarding and empowering women and girls across the country.
