Ohanaeze Urges Soludo to Reopen Onitsha Main Market Amid Rising Economic Hardship

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has appealed to Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, to consider the reopening of the Onitsha Main Market, citing the growing economic hardship facing traders and their families.

The appeal was made by the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, in a statement issued on behalf of the organisation’s National Executive Committee and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu.

While acknowledging the state government’s commitment to maintaining order, safety and sustainable development, Ohanaeze urged the governor to balance these long-term objectives with the urgent economic realities confronting thousands of residents who rely on the market for their daily livelihood.

According to the organisation, many traders and families are currently facing severe financial strain as a result of the market’s closure.

“A timely intervention through the reopening of the Onitsha Main Market would significantly ease the burden on the people, especially in these challenging economic times,” the statement said.

Ohanaeze commended Governor Soludo for what it described as his purposeful leadership and ongoing efforts to transform Anambra State, while appealing for dialogue as a means of resolving the issue.

“In the spirit of inclusive governance, we respectfully urge His Excellency to engage market leaders and relevant stakeholders through constructive dialogue to reach an amicable resolution that serves the collective interest of the government and the people,” the organisation added.

Ohanaeze expressed confidence in the governor’s commitment to the welfare of Ndi Anambra and reaffirmed its readiness to support initiatives that promote peace, economic stability and sustainable development across the state.
