The Ogun State Government has revealed plans to initiate criminal proceedings against Abubakar Adamu, the driver of a stationary truck linked to the accident that led to the deaths of associates of former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
This was disclosed by state counsel, Mr. D.O. Ogunyomi, at the Sagamu Magistrate’s Court while assuming control of the prosecution in the ongoing case against Adeniyi Kayode, who was driving the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his entourage at the time of the incident.
Ogunyomi requested that the charges against both Adamu and Kayode be merged, citing their individual involvement in the crash. He informed the court that legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) recommended that Kayode be prosecuted for reckless driving alongside the truck driver.
Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun approved the application to consolidate the charges and adjourned the case until June 2, 2026, for further hearing.
The tragic accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State. The SUV carrying Joshua and three others reportedly collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside while travelling from Lagos.
While Joshua escaped with minor injuries, two of his associates—Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami—lost their lives. Ghami was said to be Joshua’s long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer.
Following the incident, Kayode was arrested and charged with a four-count offence, including dangerous driving causing death, as well as reckless and negligent driving. The matter was later referred to the DPP for legal advice.
At a previous court session on March 17, DPP counsel, Mr. R.D. Kadiri, informed the court that new developments had emerged and would be added to the case, leading to a request for more time.
However, Kayode’s lawyer, Mr. Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the request, accusing the prosecution of deliberately delaying the proceedings.
