The Ogun State House of Assembly has called on the state government and security agencies to wade into the alleged installation of a traditional ruler from Ondo State in Irokun community, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the state.
Speaker of the Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, made the appeal on Friday during an inter-agency engagement held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
While commending the government for its infrastructural strides, Elemide urged the extension of such development to border and rural communities in order to discourage incursions from neighbouring states. He also charged the Ogun State Police Command to take full responsibility for security in the area, warning that any illegal installation of a monarch could threaten the peace in boundary communities.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiu Hamsat, in his presentation, stressed that improved infrastructure in border towns would help check incursions from neighbouring states. He equally sought more security presence in the affected areas.
Also speaking, traditional rulers led by the Ojotunmoro of Abigi, Oba Olusegun Ogunye, alongside the affected monarch, the Onirokun of Irokun, Oba Buari Balogun, reiterated that development in boundary communities was key to preventing external interference. They expressed appreciation to the state government, especially the office of the Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, for past interventions on the matter.
The meeting had in attendance key stakeholders including officials of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the State Boundary Commission represented by Surveyor Abodunrin Omotoso, and the Commissioner of Police, represented by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) Olufemi Adaramola.
The Assembly’s intervention underscores growing concerns over traditional leadership disputes along state boundaries, with calls for both infrastructural development and stronger security presence to maintain peace and stability in Ogun Waterside communities.
