Nsukka Council Workers Allege Forced APC Registration Under Duress

A controversy has emerged in Enugu State following allegations that the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Jude Asogwa, ordered council workers to compulsorily register with the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The allegation was made on Monday by a social media influencer, Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, in a Facebook post, where he described the development as a violation of workers’ rights and freedom of conscience.

According to Ugwuanyi, teaching and non-teaching staff in Nsukka LGA were allegedly directed to report to Adada Hall for APC electronic registration, with instructions to present their National Identification Number, NIN, voter cards and bank account details.

He claimed the registration was described as mandatory and accompanied by implied threats of job loss, intimidation and victimisation for non-compliance.

Ugwuanyi also shared a message purportedly circulated to head teachers, stating that all teaching and non-teaching staff across Nsukka Local Government and its development centres were required to attend the registration exercise by 9am, while schools were instructed to organise staff attendance in batches to avoid leaving pupils unattended.

Condemning the alleged directive, Ugwuanyi argued that no government has the legal or moral authority to compel citizens or civil servants to affiliate with a political party as a condition for retaining their jobs.

He warned that political participation should be driven by conviction rather than fear, alleging that such actions could be linked to attempts to build party numbers ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He wrote: “This Is A Sad Development Happening In #Nsukka LGA

“Below is the message they sent to teachers to compulsory come today @ #Adada hall and register #APC e registration or you will be sacked….

“Good afternoon head teachers and happy Sunday to you all.

“As a matter of urgency, the executive chairman of Nsukka Local government Area, Hon Engr #Jude_Asogwa requires the presence of all the teaching and Non Teaching staff in Nsukka Local government (both the dev centres) tomorrow unfailingly for e-registration, which requires your NIN, Voters card and your account details at Adada hall tomorrow by 9am. It’s mandatory to all the teaching and Non staff of Nsukka Local government Area. Inform and organise your staff so that they come in batches to avoid living the pupils alone in the school premises without supervision”.

some primary school teachers working under the local government confirmed that the development is true.

One of the workers who spoke anonymously , for fear of victimization, stated that she was already making preparations to attend the event.

“Yes, it’s true. My head teacher has already informed us to ensure we go to the place. The information is also on our WhatsApp platform,” she said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nsukka Local Government Chairman had not publicly responded to the allegations.
