Nigeria’s Fuel Imports Rise 207% as Daily Consumption Reaches 50.6 Million Litres

Nigeria’s Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, import jumped by 207 per cent to 18.1 million litres per day in June 2026 from 5.6 million litres per day in May as daily petrol consumption surged by 7 per cent to 50.6 ml/d.

This is according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, Fact Sheet for June released on Friday.

NMDPRA data showed that while fuel imports surged significantly, petrol production at Dangote Refinery declined by 22 per cent to 32.5 million litres per day in June from 41.5 ml/d in May.

This means that the country imported more PMS in June than in May. This comes as NMDPRA issued import licences to petroleum product marketers in the period in view.

Meanwhile, the data showed that Africa’s most populous country did not import automotive gas oil, or diesel, as daily consumption in June dropped by 14 per cent, from 16.2 million litres per day to 18.8 million litres per day.
In contrast, the country’s daily consumption of liquefied petroleum gas, known as cooking gas, rose by 24 per cent to 5.1 kilotonnes per day in June from 4.1 KT/D. Similarly, LPG imports surged by 1400 per cent to 1.5 KT/D as domestic production dropped by 10 per cent to 3.6 KT/D in June.
