Nigeria’s Cooking Gas Imports Skyrocket 1,400 Percent, Driving Down Costs

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, commonly known as cooking gas, has continued to decline in parts of Nigeria over the past three weeks.

A market survey by DAILY POST showed that the price of a kilogram of cooking gas has dropped to N1,300, down from N1,450, depending on the location in Abuja and its environs.

Ranoil, Shafa, and AP Ardova filling stations in Abuja dispense LPG at N1,350, N1,300, and N1,400 per kilogram, respectively, down from between N1,450 and N1,500 per kilogram.

Similarly, depot owners now sell LPG for between N997 and N1,030 per kilogram, down from as high as N1,100 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, most LPG retailers in Dawaki, Kubwa, Gwarampa, and Lugbe now sell cooking gas at N1,500 per kilogram, down from around N1,700 per kilogram.

The price reduction comes amid a surge in LPG imports into Nigeria.

Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA for June showed that LPG imports increased by N1,400 percent to 1.5 kilotonnes per day in June 2026.
