NCC seeks more spectrum for 5G deployment

The Nigerian Communications Commission has said that although the commission was ready to deploy Fifth Generation networks in Nigeria, it is still awaiting the Federal Government’s approval for the auction of 5G spectrum.

The NCC also said it also wants more spectrum allocation for 5G services.

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said these during a presentation to the newly posted Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, Mr Bitrus Nabasu, on Wednesday in Abuja.

This was contained in a press statement titled ‘5G: Our state of readiness is very high – Danbatta’ published on the commission’s website on Wednesday.

Danbatta was quoted as saying, “On the 5G, the minister has spoken about the Federal Government’s position to deploy as soon as possible. Our state of readiness is very high. There’s an auction committee for 5G with a deployment plan ready. As you know, without a plan you cannot have a successful deployment.

“All we are asking is additional spectrum to be allocated by the National Frequency Management Council. Of course, some of these spectrums are ready but we have to get the Federal Government’s approval to go ahead with the auctions.”

Danbatta disclosed that the commission would be launching a book in September on the workings of NCC, while urging governments at every level to respect the resolution of the National Economic Council on the harmonised RoW charges.
