National Holiday: US Consulate in Lagos and Embassy in Abuja to Remain Closed

The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will remain closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in observance of the national public holiday declared by the Nigerian government to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria made the announcement via its official X account on Monday, July 14, stating that the closure is in line with the nationwide commemoration of the late Nigerian leader.

“All visa appointments slated for July 15, 2025, will be rescheduled,” the statement read, assuring affected applicants that they will receive updated appointment dates in due course.

Normal consular operations are expected to resume following the conclusion of the public holiday.

The Nigerian government declared Tuesday a work-free day to pay tribute to Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, following an earlier stint as military head of state between 1983 and 1985.

He was widely acknowledged for his anti-corruption stance and efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security framework.

The U.S. Mission’s closure aligns with the spirit of national mourning, reflecting respect for Nigeria’s former leader.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier announced a seven-day mourning period, during which flags are to be flown at half-mast across the country.
