Landlords are not permitted to increase rent unless they first obtain certification from the Rent Control Department – Ghanaian Rent Commissioner says (video)

As Ghanaians continue to grapple with spike in property rentage, the country’s Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, says according to the rent laws in the West African country, no landlord has the right to sit at will to charge whatever he or she wants to charge as rent unless it has been approved by the Rent Control Department,

He said this has not been enforced because most landlords in the country are ignorant of the law.

“According to the rent law in Ghana, no Landlord has no right to seat at will and charge whatever he wants to charge unless the Rent Control Department comes in, do assessment, give you certificate of assessment and that after the certificate of assessment has been issued, you can’t increase rent”
