The Macaulay Heritage Foundation has unveiled the ‘Spirit of Greatness’ series, a year-long programme of events to commemorate the 80th death anniversary of Herbert Macaulay, widely regarded as the father of Nigerian nationalism.
The initiative is aimed at celebrating Macaulay’s enduring legacy and promoting the ideals of nationalism, cultural pride and civic responsibility that defined his life and contributions to Nigeria’s development.
As part of the celebrations, the Lagos State Government has endorsed the Herbert Macaulay Monumenting Programme, with the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, expected to lead the commencement of the project.
Organised in collaboration with the Macaulay family, the events will revolve around the theme, “Herbert Macaulay (HM) Ideology: Documenting the True Spirits of Nigeria in the Prism of Lagos.”
Speaking on behalf of the family, Adeola Macaulay disclosed that the commemorative activities will begin with a thanksgiving service at The Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, on June 28, followed by a banquet and dinner at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event is expected to attract dignitaries from across Nigeria and the diaspora, alongside federal and state government officials.
Other activities lined up for the ‘Spirit of Greatness’ series include arts, painting and essay competitions, exhibitions at the J.K. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, a Cultural Night of Songs on Yoruba Perspectives at Freedom Park, and a press colloquium at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba.
According to the foundation, the year-long programme is designed to celebrate the values, resilience and achievements that continue to define Nigerians, particularly Lagosians, on the global stage while preserving the legacy of Herbert Macaulay for future generations.
