Insecurity : Niger Lawmakers Demand Immigration Crackdown on Undocumented Miners

 

Niger State Assembly has expressed concern over the influx of illegal immigrants engaging in illicit mining activities in parts of the state, citing security challenges.

The Speaker, Hon Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, made the remarks during a visit by the Assistant Comptroller General of the Immigration Service Zone D, in charge of Niger, Kwara, Kebbi, and the FCT, Anthony Emeka Chikezie, at the assembly complex in Minna.

He noted that most illicit miners are migrants from other African countries who entered the state without proper documentation or the knowledge of the Immigration Service, thereby exacerbating security issues.

“The state is facing a lot of security challenges at the moment and the influx of these immigrants engage in illicit mining activities is not helping matters. The immigration service is lacking behind in this regards,” the Speaker stated.

He urged the Service to intensify efforts to check illegal immigration, adding that the service is lagging in this area.

According to him, “We are urging you to do more to address this gaps, we need to redoubled our efforts to check their influx. That will also help in addressing some of the challenges we are facing in the area of security.”

He also assured the Immigration Service of the Assembly’s support in addressing operational challenges, adding, “For the immigration to discharge it duties effectively, it requires the assistance. The government will assist you to be able to do your job effectively.”

Earlier, the Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration Service Zone D, Anthony Emeka Chikezie, explained that the visit was aimed at soliciting the support of the Assembly while highlighting challenges facing the service, including operational vehicles, office furniture, and accommodation issues.
