Iheanacho set for first EPL start

Kelechi Iheanacho will hope to be named in Leicester City’s starting lineup in the English Premier League for the first time this season against Burnley on Saturday, UGAMATV reports.

He last started an EPL game for the Foxes in their 4-2 loss to Tottenham on the final day of last season on May 23.

So far in this new season, the 24-year-old forward has made five substitute appearances. He is also yet to make an assist, a block, tackle or a clearance so far in the EPL.

His two starts this season have come in the Foxes’ 2-2 draw with Napoli in the Europa League and in the Carabao Cup third-round win against Championship side Millwall on Wednesday night where he scored the goal to seal the win in the 88th minute.

The Nigerian also played a part in Ademola Lookman’s opening goal, with his shot being parried by the Millwall goalkeeper to the new signing to open his account for the club.

Last season, Iheanacho started 15 games and scored 18 goals in his last 28 appearances.

Ahead of the game at the King Power stadium, Leicester City assistant manager Chris Davies urged Iheanacho to be patient for his time as he is an important player of the team.

“Against Millwall was just another example of what he (Iheanacho) can do and the partnership he forged with Jamie Vardy last year was excellent towards the end,” Davies said.

“He’s only started two games this season (the Community Shield and the Carabao Cup) it wouldn’t surprise me if he start at the weekend (against Burnley).”

“We’ve got a really competitive squad, but the main thing for Kele (Iheanacho) is that he’s in good form, he’s goal against Millwall is great for his confidence.

“We’re in a lot of competitions so there’s going to be a lot of opportunities for everyone to play. But Kele was an important player for us last season and there’s no doubt he will be an important player for us this season as well.

“All he can do is when he gets an opportunity, perform as well as he can. That’s what we ask all of them to do.”

Brendan Rodgers also added, “It’s all deciding on how we want to play. It’s great news because that wasn’t the case with Kelechi when I first came in. His approach and confidence is improving. It’s great that he’s able to make an impact if he starts or coming off the bench.

“If you play with two strikers, it can affect the balance behind that. Jamie has got three in five games, Ade has scored, Harvey has scored, Youri has scored, the guys you want to be scoring are starting to.”
