The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has pledged to personally engage with retired police officers who staged a protest in Abuja on Monday, demanding better retirement benefits and improved welfare for both serving and retired personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
The assurance was conveyed through the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, following a demonstration led by the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, alongside other activists.
The Nigeria Police Force, via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, confirmed that the FCT Commissioner had already held a preliminary meeting with the protesting retirees. It further disclosed that arrangements have been concluded for the Inspector-General to meet with the retirees at the Peacekeeping Hall of the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
However, the Force raised concerns over attempts by certain individuals with ulterior motives to hijack the peaceful protest.
The development highlights the growing demand for comprehensive pension reform and improved post-service welfare for law enforcement officers, a call that continues to gain momentum across the country.
