I’d be unemployed without music — Ayra Starr

Nigerian musician, Ayra Starr has revealed that she would likely be unemployed if she had not found success in the entertainment industry, crediting her music career with changing the direction of her life.

Speaking in a chat with culture and style platform EE72 ahead of her Boiler Room set, the singer reflected on her rise to fame, her journey with Mavin Records, and the realities of living life in the public eye.

“If I were not doing music, I would literally be unemployed. I do not even think I would be a content creator. That would be a lot of work. I would just be vibing in my mother’s house, eating my mother’s food,” she said.

The 24-year-old also recalled how excited she was when she first learned that Don Jazzy and the Mavin team had been listening to her music before she was officially signed to the label. “I was so excited when I found out they were listening to my music. You know who it is,” she said.

Ayra Starr admitted that her rapid ascent to global fame comes with its own unique challenges, revealing that she sometimes wishes the public knew less about her personal thoughts because she tends to speak very freely during press appearances.

“I really wish people knew less about me. Once the camera comes on, I cannot stop talking. And I feel like I overshare,” she added.

Original names, Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, the Grammy-nominated artist joined Mavin Records in 2020 after being discovered by Don Jazzy through her acoustic covers on social media. Since then, she has grown into one of Africa’s biggest musical exports
