Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has made a remarkable gesture to support Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) by donating 50 buses and 30 tricycles, aiming to ease transportation challenges for students and staff.
The donation ceremony, held at the OAU Sports Centre, attracted prominent personalities, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adewole; and Osun APC governorship candidate, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, among others.
Senator Tinubu arrived at 11:30 a.m. and, alongside the Ooni of Ife, officially inaugurated the fleet of vehicles. Students greeted her with enthusiastic cheers at the sports centre pavilion, expressing heartfelt gratitude for her generosity.
In his remarks, OAU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, described the donation as “unprecedented,” saying, “We thank the First Lady for her generosity. She is a shining star of this institution, and her contributions greatly enhance our development.”
The Vice-Chancellor added that the 50 buses and 30 tricycles will significantly ease transportation challenges for students, staff, and the surrounding community, improving overall quality of life on campus.
Oluwatodimu David, President of the OAU Students’ Union, also lauded Senator Tinubu, saying, “We are grateful for the donation of the CNG buses and tricycles. This initiative aligns perfectly with our administration’s vision and will go a long way in resolving student transportation issues.”
David further praised the First Lady’s commitment to campus beautification and the renovation of the university amphitheatre, describing her as not only a mother to the nation but also a devoted mother to the OAU community.
