The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has ordered the disbandment of all tactical teams within the Command, merging them into a single, coordinated unit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
The newly created unit will handle all violent crime cases across the FCT, with the aim of improving coordination and strengthening operational efficiency.
Sanusi also issued a strong warning to officers against extortion, harassment of civilians, and other forms of misconduct, stressing that such behavior will not be tolerated under his leadership.
He made these remarks during an emergency meeting with Area Commanders and Tactical Commanders at the FCT Police Command Headquarters. At the meeting, the Commissioner noted that crime rates in the nation’s capital have significantly declined since he assumed office.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the FCT, Josephine Adeh, the meeting—held on Friday—focused on enhancing security operations, improving professionalism, and sustaining the progress made in reducing crime across the territory.
According to the statement, the Commissioner commended officers for their dedication to duty but urged them to remain alert, proactive, and responsive in their respective areas of responsibility.
He reiterated the directive of the Inspector-General of Police on maintaining strict professional standards, warning that any officer found engaging in misconduct would face disciplinary action. Area Commanders were also instructed to pass the directive down to their Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and other personnel, with a clear note that supervisors will be held accountable for the actions of their subordinates.
To ensure compliance, the Commissioner directed the Commander of the X-Squad to intensify surveillance and enforcement against unprofessional conduct within the Command, adding that any erring officer would be promptly arrested and sanctioned.
Sanusi further called on residents of the FCT to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and security. He advised the public to avoid provoking confrontations for the purpose of recording and sharing content online, emphasizing that officers are committed to protecting lives and property.
He also encouraged residents to report suspicious activities promptly, noting that public cooperation remains vital to effective policing.
The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, pledging to continue implementing proactive strategies to sustain peace and security across the territory.
