Enugu right groups demand prosecution of policeman for allegedly killing five

Some human rights groups in Enugu, on Tuesday, demanded the dismissal and prosecution of a trigger-happy policeman who allegedly killed five people and wounded four others in the state.

UGAMATV had reported that the policeman, who came from the Abia State Police Command and was attached to a Lebanese and chief executive officer of a lottery firm, on Sunday, June 20, ran amok and killed five neighbours, including a domestic worker he was supposed to protect, and turned around to say the victims were killed by unknown gunmen.

Three months after the incident, the police in Enugu State had yet to disclose the identity of the policeman, who was reported to be an inspector.

Speaking with our correspondent on Tuesday, the President of the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network, Olu Omotayo, slammed the police for delaying the prosecution of the cop.

He called on the Police Service Commission to intervene and ensure that he was brought to justice.

Omotayo said it was absurd for the police not to have concluded investigation in a matter that happened in June and wondered why he was being shielded to the extent that his name was still not known to the public.

Also reacting, the President, International Solidarity for Peace and Human Rights Initiative, Mass Movement for True Democracy and Good Governance, Coalition of Civil Society Organisations, and Workers and Human Rights Defenders, Osmond Ugwu, described the delay in the trial of the policeman as unfortunate.

“We call on the Inspector-General of Police to redeem the image of the police by ensuring that the policeman is brought to justice,” he added.
