The Edo State Police Command says it has arrested several officers accused of extorting N300,000 from a local furniture maker. The arrest follows the circulation of a viral video by a social media influencer alleging the unlawful collection of money by the policemen.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday in Benin City. He revealed that the implicated officers, attached to the Oba Market Area Command, have been identified, arrested, and compelled to return the money to the victim.
Yamu said the officers will face disciplinary procedures in line with the Nigeria Police Force’s regulations.
“Stern administrative measures have also been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to ensure professionalism, discipline, and respect for the rights of citizens in the discharge of their duties,” he stated.
The Command further encouraged members of the public to report any incidents of unprofessional conduct to the Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) or the Complaints Response Unit (CRU).
Yamu assured residents that the Edo State Police Command remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in its operations.
