Drama at EFCC Headquarters as Protesters Demand Accountability in El-Rufai Probe

Tension flared in Abuja on Monday as demonstrators gathered at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling for transparency and accountability in the ongoing prosecution of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The protesters, under the banner of the Mega National Movement for Good Governance (MNMGG), arrived in large numbers, chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards with inscriptions such as “No Sacred Cows,” “Justice Must Prevail,” and “They Must Be Held Accountable.”

Addressing the crowd, the group’s spokesperson, Muhammad Abdullahi, cautioned against politicizing the matter.

“This is about accountability, not persecution. Let the courts determine the outcome,” he said, urging the former governor to submit himself fully to the legal process.

The group referenced the 2024 report of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which allegedly highlighted concerns over contract awards and the state’s debt profile during El-Rufai’s administration. They called on anti-corruption agencies to carry out their duties “without fear or favour,” stressing that the constitution provides clear backing for such actions.

Responding on behalf of EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, the Commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, assured the demonstrators that the agency would adhere strictly to due process in handling the case.

The protest added another layer of intensity to the unfolding legal and political developments surrounding the former governor.
