Churches Closed in Eda-Oniyo as Ekiti Govt, Police Step Up Rescue of Kidnap Victims

Church activities were suspended across Eda-Oniyo in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Sunday as the community observed a solemn day of mourning for a pastor reportedly killed during a recent bandit attack.

All fifteen churches in the town remained closed in honour of the deceased cleric and in solidarity with families of the abducted members by last Tuesday’s invasion of Christ Apostolic Church, CAC, Number Two, Eda-Oniyo.

Worship centres affected by the shutdown include the Anglican Church, Christ Apostolic Church, Deeper Life Bible Church, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Hope of Life, Cherubim and Seraphim, and the Assemblies of God Church, among others.

The quiet atmosphere across the community showed the deep grief and tension that have gripped residents since the attack, which left several families devastated. Some households are still assessing their losses, while many continue to live in fear.

The incident, which drew widespread condemnation, reportedly led to the abduction of nineteen persons, including sixteen women, one child, and two toddlers. Residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said efforts are ongoing through security channels and community leaders to secure the release of those kidnapped.

In the aftermath of the attack, the security presence in the area has been reinforced. The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Falade Michael, led a delegation of senior officers on an assessment visit to the community, assuring residents of intensified operations to track down the perpetrators and rescue the abducted victims.

Also Officials of the Ekiti State Government also visited Eda-Oniyo to commiserate with the people and evaluate the security situation. They reiterated the administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.

Political figures from within and outside Ilejemeje Local Government have equally visited the community, expressing condolences to affected families and calling for stronger, coordinated security measures to prevent a recurrence.
Community leaders say while these visits have provided some reassurance, the priority remains the safe return of the abducted victims and restoration of normalcy to the once peaceful town.
